Sustainable Design for the 21st Century

by D. Brent Sauser, Architect

May of 1979 seems so long ago.  That was when I graduated from Arizona State University from the College of Architecture.  In the 33 years since I have managed to practice architecture in every US time zone, Eastern Europe, and Bolivia, South America.  It was only eight years after graduation that I started reading books on passive solar design and environmentally sensitive design.  My entire design philosophy was reshaped.  I began writing a book entitled “Ecotecture”, that focused on the need to move from a dollar driven bottom line to a more environmentally sensitive design approach.  During this period I made presentations to the Sierra Club and other interested groups.  However, there was no US Green Building Council in 1987, no local LEED Chapters to present to, no nationwide movement to encourage sustainable design.  I decided to file away my notes and wait for another time to continue my Ecotecture efforts.  That time is now!  Technology and mass public interest has never been higher.  The driving principles behind Net Zero design and Ecotecture are the same.  I look forward to sharing many Ecotecture concepts on this website.  I invite your comments and input regarding Net Zero design. is dedicated to a “full circle” approach to Sustainable Design and Green Building.  We applaud and endorse the efforts of organizations like the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for helping to move the entire building industry in the direction of greater environmental design sensitivity.  Green Building is no longer a foreign term and many features of Sustainable Design are now mandated by building code or local, state, or federal statute.   We have come a long way in a relatively short period of time.

The focus of is to help raise the Green Building “bar” to the high level of Net Zero, where energy, water, and support systems are self-generating on site, and require little or no off-site support to sustain itself.  Impossible . . . you might say!  Perhaps that might be true 10 years ago, but not today. will feature many different projects that have risen to the level of Net Zero.  We will include links to leading edge manufactures and product types that can help you with your projects.  Our objective is to provide a variety of useful information on this website, and save you precious time in the process.

The technology is here for achieving a Net Zero solution for your project.  It is our hope that the information provided here will help us all take Green Building and Sustainable Design to the NetZeroMax.
